On April 12, 1978, the Grateful Dead took to the stage at Cameron Indoor Stadium, Duke University, for a performance that has become a cherished piece of their storied legacy. North Carolina in April was alive with the vibrant colors of redbuds, daffodils, and tulips, and the atmosphere in Cameron Indoor Stadium was no less colorful.
The stadium, then a modest basketball arena with minimal ventilation and insufficient bathrooms, was far from the grand concert venues the Dead were accustomed to. Yet, this only added to the intimate and electric vibe of the show. Duke alumni who attended recall the palpable sense of anticipation as the audience settled into their seats, and student ushers soon realized it was futile to try and keep the aisles clear—everyone was ready to party.
Bob Weir, looking youthful and almost preppy, greeted the crowd with a warm, “Thanks for having us back,” before the band launched into their classic opener, “Jack Straw.” Despite some initial technical difficulties, including Garcia’s microphone being off at first, the band quickly found their groove. The acoustics were a challenge, prompting Donna Godchaux to place her fingers in her ears to better harmonize, but she soon found her way, as she often did. The show continued with “Dire Wolf” and several other Grateful Dead favorites, showcasing the band’s ability to adapt and deliver despite the less-than-ideal conditions.
This performance, along with seven other previously unreleased live shows from the spring of 1978, is featured in the exclusive release “Friend of the Devils: April ’78.” Limited to 10,000 individually numbered copies and available only at Dead.net, this collection is a treasure for Deadheads. Mastered by Audio Engineer Jeffrey Norman using Plangent Processes tape restoration and speed correction, the set is a testament to the band’s remarkable live sound. Designed by Steve Vance with a custom box featuring a removable wave drum and adorned with original artwork by Matthew Brannon, the collection also includes a 48-page book with liner notes by Steve Silberman and photos by James Anderson, Bob Minkin, and others.
