The Grateful Dead’s performance at the Gizah Sound and Light Theater on September 15, 1978, stands as a legendary moment in the band’s extensive live repertoire.

Situated against the backdrop of the ancient pyramids of Egypt, this concert was part of the Dead’s groundbreaking journey to bring their unique brand of improvisational rock to new and exotic locales.

The setting alone was enough to make this show unforgettable. The Gizah Sound and Light Theater, nestled near the iconic Great Pyramid of Giza, provided a mystical and awe-inspiring backdrop for the Dead’s music.

Surrounded by ancient wonders that had stood for millennia, the band and their audience found themselves immersed in a timeless atmosphere that transcended the boundaries of space and time.

The performance itself was a testament to the Dead’s improvisational prowess and their ability to create transcendent musical experiences in any environment. The setlist featured a mix of beloved classics and extended jams that showcased the band’s telepathic musical communication.

On this night, the second night of the run, the band stretched the song to new heights, weaving intricate musical tapestries that seemed to echo the timeless mysteries of the surrounding pyramids.

The concert culminated in a spellbinding rendition of “Terrapin Station,” a haunting ballad that spoke to the eternal themes of love, loss, and redemption.

Against the backdrop of the ancient pyramids, the song took on added significance, resonating with a sense of profound cosmic beauty that seemed to connect the past, present, and future in a single moment of musical transcendence.

For those fortunate enough to witness it, the Grateful Dead’s performance at the Gizah Sound and Light Theater on September 15, 1978, remains a cherished memory—an unforgettable testament to the power of music to unite, uplift, and inspire across the ages.

Dave's Picks Vol. 2: Dillon Stadium, Hartford, CT 7/31/74

Very nearly selected as the inaugural Dave's Picks, 7/31/74 would eventually become the second release in the series in 2012. The Hartford '74 show was the penultimate outdoor concert for the Grateful Dead's Wall Of Sound, which was on the tail end of its existence. DAVE'S PICKS VOL. 2 includes every note the Grateful Dead played that night plus Phil and Ned's Seastones interlude. Featuring a rare "Scarlet Begonias" show-opener, and ending with an encore of Uncle John's Band, Dave's Picks Vol. 2 features three full-length sets, a truly epic, monumental show from 1974, a year many Dead Heads consider the band's greatest. The show includes lengthy workouts on "China>Rider," "Weather Report Suite," "Eyes Of The World>China Doll," and a "Truckin'>Wharf Rat" sequence that includes several thematic jams as the band joins these two classics. The CD sold out immediately in 2012, and we're thrilled to be re-issuing this terrific show on vinyl. – David Lemieux

Dave's Picks Vol. 49: Frost Amphitheatre, Stanford University, Palo Alto, CA (4/27/85 & 4/28/85)

Anyone who has ever seen the Dead can testify that one of its shows will add quite a bit of color to the environment here at Stanford. Anyone who has not seen one of these spectacles should have the opportunity to do so. The Grateful Dead are an important part of the Bay Area's cultural history. Those of us who saw them last week can testify that the Dead are alive and well. The Concert Network would be hard-pressed to find an act which would bring Frost Amphitheatre to life as the Dead would. - The Stanford Daily

As you know by now, we'd certainly have voted aye on this motion, so much so, that we've loaded up DAVE'S PICKS 49 with not one, but two complete Grateful Dead shows from the Frost Amphitheatre, Stanford University, Palo Alto, CA 4/27/85 and 4/28/85. The first shows from '85 in the series, these back-to-back hometown performances couldn't be more different while delivering the same level of passion and precision, five hours of it, in fact.

Limited to 25,000 numbered copies, DAVE'S PICKS VOLUME 49: FROST AMPHITHEATRE, STANFORD U, PALO ALTO, CA 4/27/85 & 4/28/85 has been mastered to HDCD specs by Jeffrey Norman at Mockingbird Mastering.

    Music Quotes
There's a lot of creativity in the industry, but I don't necessarily think that the most creative DJs or producers are always the biggest ones. I think it would be nice to see more of an open culture to different music. I think that's happening. With Spotify, I think people are discovering a lot of artists they might not discover otherwise.
