Bobby & The Midnights

Bobby & The Midnights was a musical project formed by Bob Weir, one of the founding members of the Grateful Dead, during the early 1980s. This band represented a departure from Weir's work with the Grateful Dead, exploring new musical directions and showcasing his versatility as a musician and songwriter. Bob Weir formed Bobby & The Midnights in 1980, during a hiatus from the Grateful Dead. The band's lineup featured Weir on guitar and vocals, along with a rotating cast of musicians that included keyboardist Brent Mydland, drummer Billy Cobham, and bassist Alphonso Johnson, among others. The band's name was a nod to Weir's nickname, "Bobby," and their tendency to perform late-night gigs. Bobby & The Midnights drew inspiration from a diverse range of musical styles, including rock, funk, reggae, and R&B. Their music showcased Weir's eclectic tastes and his willingness to experiment with new sounds and genres outside of the Grateful Dead's traditional wheelhouse. The band released their debut album, "Bobby & The Midnights," in 1981. The album featured a mix of original compositions penned by Weir, as well as cover songs that reflected the band's diverse influences. Tracks like "Easy to Slip" and "Bombs Away" showcased Weir's songwriting chops and the band's tight musicianship. While Bobby & The Midnights never achieved the same level of commercial success or cultural impact as the Grateful Dead, they developed a dedicated following among fans of Weir's solo work and those interested in exploring new musical territory. The band toured extensively throughout the early 1980s, performing energetic live shows that highlighted their improvisational skills and infectious grooves. Despite their relatively short-lived existence, Bobby & The Midnights left a lasting legacy in the world of rock music. The band's music remains a testament to Weir's versatility as a musician and his willingness to push the boundaries of his creativity. While the project ultimately came to an end, Bobby & The Midnights served as an important chapter in Weir's musical journey and a reminder of the enduring spirit of exploration that has defined his career.
