Ratdog
Ratdog was a musical project formed by Grateful Dead guitarist Bob Weir in 1995, following the passing of Jerry Garcia. Named after Weir's nickname, "Rat," the band emerged as a platform for Weir to explore new musical directions and continue the legacy of the Grateful Dead in a post-Garcia era.
Initially conceived as a side project, Ratdog quickly gained momentum and developed into a full-fledged band with its own identity and sound. Alongside Bob Weir, the band's lineup featured a rotating cast of talented musicians, including bassist Rob Wasserman, drummer Jay Lane, keyboardist Jeff Chimenti, saxophonist Dave Ellis, and guitarist Mark Karan, among others.
Ratdog's music drew from a wide range of influences, including rock, blues, jazz, folk, and Americana, creating a sound that was both eclectic and deeply rooted in tradition. With Weir's distinctive guitar playing and soulful vocals leading the way, the band crafted a repertoire of original compositions and covers that showcased their collective musicianship and improvisational prowess.
One of the defining features of Ratdog was their dynamic live performances. The band's concerts were known for their electrifying energy, extended jams, and inventive improvisations, drawing audiences of all ages and backgrounds who were captivated by the band's musical chemistry and onstage camaraderie.
Over the years, Ratdog continued to evolve and adapt, experimenting with different musical styles and collaborations while remaining true to their roots. They released several studio albums, including "Evening Moods" (2000) and "Weir Here: The Best of Bob Weir" (2004), as well as a number of live recordings that captured the magic of their live performances.
Despite several lineup changes and hiatuses over the years, Ratdog remained a beloved and influential band in the jam band community. Their music continues to be celebrated by fans of Bob Weir and the Grateful Dead alike, serving as a testament to the enduring legacy of one of rock music's most iconic figures.
While Ratdog officially disbanded in 2014, their music lives on through a rich catalog of recordings and performances that continue to inspire and uplift listeners around the world. As a testament to Bob Weir's ongoing commitment to musical exploration and innovation, Ratdog remains an important chapter in his storied career and a cherished part of the jam band landscape.
