The Legion of Mary
The Legion of Mary was a short-lived but highly influential musical project led by Grateful Dead guitarist Jerry Garcia. Formed in 1974 during a brief hiatus from the Grateful Dead, the band provided Garcia with an opportunity to explore different musical avenues and collaborate with a diverse group of musicians outside of the Dead's orbit.
Named after the Catholic organization of the same name, the Legion of Mary featured a rotating lineup of talented musicians who shared Garcia's passion for improvisation and musical exploration. Alongside Garcia, the band's core members included keyboardist Merl Saunders, drummer Ron Tutt, bassist John Kahn, and saxophonist Martin Fierro.
The Legion of Mary's music drew from a wide range of influences, including jazz, blues, funk, gospel, and R&B, creating a sound that was both eclectic and deeply soulful. With Garcia's virtuosic guitar playing and Saunders' soulful organ work at the forefront, the band crafted a repertoire of original compositions and covers that showcased their collective musicianship and improvisational prowess.
One of the defining features of the Legion of Mary was their electrifying live performances. The band's concerts were known for their extended jams, inventive improvisations, and infectious energy, drawing audiences of all ages and backgrounds who were captivated by the band's musical chemistry and onstage camaraderie.
Despite their relatively short tenure, the Legion of Mary left a lasting legacy in the world of music. Their fusion of jazz, blues, and rock influences helped pave the way for future generations of jam bands and improvisational ensembles, while their dynamic live shows inspired countless musicians and fans around the world.
While the Legion of Mary disbanded after just a few years, their music continues to be celebrated by fans of Jerry Garcia and Merl Saunders alike. Through a rich catalog of live recordings and archival releases, the band's legacy lives on, serving as a testament to the power of musical collaboration and the enduring spirit of creativity that defined Garcia's illustrious career.
